A confluence of actualities meant glorious weather and a day off (and no doubt Mars and Jupiter in the right juxtaposition) so there was only one thing for it - head for the hills.
Unfortunately this meant getting up at five o`clock - on a day off? - but the days are still too short for late starts in the mountains so we were on the path to Lochnagar** by quarter to nine after a drive of a couple of hours, unable to believe how clear and still it was.
The combination of sun and ice made for some sparkly decorations
but in fact the general splendiforousness of sun, blue sky, ice, snow and majestic mountain defy description - or at least my descriptive powers.
Almost as satisfying as reaching the summit was the walk back: across the tops,
down to and along the river - past the rather wonderful Glas Allt falls -
and finally to a tranquil Loch Muick.
To walk for seven hours in the mountains in such benign winter conditions must be one of the few things it`s worth getting up at five in the morning for...........
